My lawyer is a light-hearted guy, and his blog posts demonstrate the best use of humour in a blog post (in my humble opinion) that I have ever run across. I read a lot of blogs, and his posts really stand out. I’m a long-time fan of his sort of low-key, gentle “poking fun at anything and everything legal”. He’s a great example of how not to take yourself too seriously and yet get your message across in an amusing and jargon-free way, something I think we should all aspire to.
Using humour in a post can be a minefield. The same things are not funny to everyone, but you ARE a human being and some things are universal, no matter what your sex, profession or culture. As an example, finding a way to poke fun at elements of your profession that you find frustrating or annoying can be eye-opening and amusing for anyone outside your field of endeavour. However, don’t use this as an excuse for a rant; it’s just meant to be an amusing comment on something about your work or your clients that will not be offensive or intimidating.
I periodically get asked to “just do a rough layout of the website and I’ll decide whether I’m going to use your services”. I politely point out that next time I’m using their services I’ll decide whether or not they’ll be my doctor/dentist/car repair service after I’ve assessed the quality of their work. If I’m not happy, I won’t expect to pay. Somehow, that usually gets the message across. I’m not sure why so many people are convinced that this is a hobby for me instead of a “real job”. Even though I love what I do this is actually how I earn a living…
And for those clients who try to persuade me by saying “C’mon, it’ll only take a minute” I say “Show me.”
